THE BIGGER, THE BETTER

SYNOPSIS

The lower part of Barcelona’s best district is a quiet and stately neighbourhood.

The Bigger, the Better is based on true events seen and heard by the walls of The house of the Columns, by the building across the street and the the Dominican church. The furthest we’ll go is the Plaça Catalunya, the cascading fountain next to the Catalan Parliament building and the Born District.

An ensemble comedy: a penniless aristocrat with strong religious convictions, his left-wing daughter who’s always on his case, the grand dame with a turbulent past, the naughty Dominican friar, who is friends with a great Cuban singer but he’s not able to get involved with a Caribbean mulata, the mother of a black-as-coal pro-Catalan independence son. And there are the two concierges from Valencia who tell each other everything; the Scottish woman, daughter of the Glasgow train robber, hidden behind three personalities, languages and a bunch of passports; her perfidious nephew who is after her with his handsome Russian lover; the American twins on the lookout for young boys; the lesbian owner of a hip bar; a former Spanish secret service agent, hidden in the Catalan police and exposed by a Valencian friend…

The Catalan capital’s multiculturalism, Barcelona, has a lot to offer.

So therefore, The Bigger, the Better! Sabates Grosses!

It’s better to laugh than cry!

Returning to comedy, and especially with this group of actors, what a pleasure for us all!

DIRECTOR'S TEXT

THE BIGGER, THE BETTER

I am delighted to have shot my second comedy this year. While editing Oh, Quina Joia! I thought about the popular Catalan saying that literally translates as “If you don’t want broth, then make it two”. So here we go.

The opening song in Stephen Sondheim’s musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, was entitled Tragedy Tomorrow, Comedy Tonight.

I’m saving tragedy for future projects that I’ve already prepared for the upcoming year, and I’ve become engrossed in a new comedy while editing the previous one. In fact, it came to me on the freeway and I explained its story and structure to my film editor and his girlfriend on our return trip from Figueres to Barcelona. In any country, but most especially in ours, to make someone laugh is considered an inferior art, while tears, on the other hand, are awarded a higher value. Despite my interest in free and unconventional narrative forms, which undoubtedly comes from my days working in the theatre, I’ve always liked genres and I don’t mind jumping from one to the other, from drama to comedy or from fiction to documentary, as long as I’m passionate about the story I’m telling and that my vision is present in the narration; the director’s vision. I often talk about it.

Billy Wilder’s famous quote also comes to mind: “If you’re going to tell people the truth, be funny or they’ll kill you”. All that audiences will see is the true events that I’ve witnessed over the past 26 years. Since reality can be more astonishing than fiction, all of my neighbours can testify that this comic entanglement, which I hope is greatly entertaining, is true.

The various forms of humor allow for solid levels of provocation, hardly imaginable in a drama. An important observation to take into account when you pose the question: drama or comedy?

So therefore, The Bigger, the Better! Sabates Grosses!

It’s better to laugh than cry!

It’s such a charming and witty portrait of Barcelona, the ‘Example Gay’ with all its eccentricities, or such a lovely ‘homage; to Casp 59, which has such happy memories for me personally, but for all those reasons, as well all actors charming performance, I found this so engaging and with such a happy and positive ending, despite all of our uncertainties,  about our respective  ‘national’ futures. A ‘love-letter' to my favourite city in Europe!

És subversivament 'camp', nothing portentous or polite.

All of us loved to share THE BIGGER, THE BETTER. Americans have the right to see this film. Witty, the director Ventura Pons is so witty. And funny, what a comedy! We can’t wait to see it in our cinemas.
